Identify the current wallet interface
The official overview presents Agentic Wallet CLI and Agentic Wallet MCP with a companion app. Both cover x402 payments. The CLI also lists sending and trading, while the MCP interface focuses on discovering and paying for services. A requirement for general transfers therefore needs a different check from a requirement to buy a paid API response. [1]
Suppose a research agent needs one supplier report costing an illustrative $0.20. Its immediate requirement is to discover a compatible resource, inspect the offer and pay through an allowed route. If the same agent also needs a separate transfer operation, confirm that capability through the specific interface instead of assuming the wallet name guarantees it.
Keep Agentic Wallet separate from AgentKit, marketplace or discovery products and the underlying CDP wallet services. Similar branding can place them near one another in documentation. That does not mean every feature from one belongs to another.
Keep the Coinbase components distinct
Scroll the table to compare all columns.
| Component | Role in a purchase | Do not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Agentic Wallet CLI | Agent-facing command and skill path; x402, send and trade scope described | Identical operation scope on every other interface |
| Agentic Wallet MCP | Companion app and MCP path for discovery and payment | General sending and trading from the CLI feature list |
| AgentKit | Separate agent development component | All Agentic Wallet features without its own documentation |
| Discovery catalog | Find candidate paid resources | Wallet custody or authority enforcement |
| Underlying wallet service | Account and signing infrastructure for a chosen setup | The agent interface without configuration evidence |
Map account ownership and signing access
Your organization should know which account owns the funds and how an agent obtains permission to use it. The model proposing a purchase, the application enforcing policy and the component signing or submitting payment need clear roles. A convenient interface should not obscure those responsibilities.
For the supplier report, identify who funds the account and who can revoke purchasing access. Determine whether the agent session can only pay for supported resources or can perform broader financial operations. Keep administrative actions separate from the report purchase where the implementation permits it.
Do not infer custody from an agent-facing product label. Inspect the applicable current wallet documentation and terms for your configuration. Ask who controls signing material, how recovery works and what account access is required. A generic statement about the parent company's wallets is not enough to answer those questions for this path.
The task card below records the decisions needed before funds are used. It is a planning aid, not a claim that every control listed is automatically supplied by Agentic Wallet.
Plan the supplier-report purchase
- Task
- Discover and purchase a report for the requested supplier.
- Interface
- Choose CLI or MCP according to the required operations.
- Authority
- Specify seller, purpose and permitted spending before payment.
- Compatibility
- Match the current resource offer to client support.
- Evidence
- Keep purchase, payment outcome and valid report connected.
- Recovery
- Investigate an existing attempt before repurchasing after a timeout.
- Source and check date
- Coinbase Agentic Wallet overview, checked 8 October 2026. [1]
- Version evidence
- Overview does not pin a CLI package or MCP-server release; record your installed revision separately.
- Open account questions
- Custody/recovery, exact budget enforcement, fees and eligibility require the specific configuration reference and terms.
Match the seller offer to the payment interface
An agent wallet can provide a payment capability while the seller still requires a particular scheme, network and asset. Compare the current offer with the actual client support. A balance in a familiar stablecoin does not alone prove that the chosen resource can be purchased.
For the $0.20 report, verify the requested supplier identifier, output schema, seller and payment option. The synthetic price is not a Coinbase quote or provider fee. The actual seller's validated terms determine the purchase commitment.
Keep funding separate from each resource call. An operator may fund a bounded account while the agent can only request allowed purchases from it. That separation helps explain who owns the available funds and which action creates spending.
Avoid publishing unverified install commands as a shortcut to this decision. Follow the official reference for the exact interface you select, inspect the configuration and record its version. An installation succeeding is different from a complete authorized purchase.
Review controls at their enforcement point
The Agentic Wallet overview describes guardrails, but your implementation needs a precise account of the controls applying to its actual interface. Identify which rules prevent signing or submission, which rules your application supplies and which displays merely report historical activity. [1]
For the research task, a $1 illustrative budget can permit several small reports while still needing seller and purpose restrictions. The agent should not treat an available balance as permission to spend it on anything. Define the relevant constraints outside the model's explanation.
Concurrent requests need coordinated accounting. Two purchases reading the same remaining budget should not each reserve the full amount independently. Ask whether the selected wallet configuration supplies the required aggregate enforcement or whether your application owns that ledger.
A rejected purchase should produce an actionable reason. Unsupported payment option, denied policy and insufficient available funds require different next steps. The agent should report the constraint rather than improvising another financial route without authority.
Keep payment outcome and report delivery separate
After a payment-aware call, inspect the documented outcome and the report. A successful tool interaction does not establish that the returned supplier identifier matches the request. Validate the resource before using it in a financial assessment.
If a response disappears after submission, resolve the existing attempt before creating another purchase. Keep relevant references and define the seller's recovery route. A wallet transaction record and a report retrieval mechanism perform different jobs.
Record the environment of any test. A test-network purchase does not prove production eligibility or real-money settlement. This article uses a synthetic report scenario and makes no claim that we completed a live Agentic Wallet transaction.
Access changes also need an operating procedure. Know how to stop new purchases, revoke a session and preserve records for existing attempts. Deleting an agent conversation is not a substitute for understanding the actual financial access it had.
Compare alternatives using the same report purchase
Use one scenario when comparing wallet stacks. Ask each alternative how the agent requests the report, where permission is checked, which payment option is supported and how the outcome is retrieved. Do not compare one provider's entire platform with only another provider's narrow agent interface.
The general wallet guide helps build that shortlist. The authorization and spending-limit guides help define the surrounding policy. They are useful even when a provider supplies some controls, because the organization still needs to understand its own permission and accounting model.
Choose Agentic Wallet when its documented interface matches the required purchase and your account and control requirements are satisfied. Keep open questions explicit until they are resolved. The decision should identify a concrete interface and financial boundary, not just a recognized wallet brand.
